Latin inūtilis in- “not” + ūtilis “useful” → Middle French inutile → English inutile
The word has carried i‑n‑u at the front since Latin. 犬 inu is Japanese for dog. The two are unrelated and about two thousand years apart. Nobody planned this. The dog was in the word first.
